The University of Strathclyde was established in 1796. Notable alumni is Henry Faulds, who was a Scottish physician, missionary and scientist who is noted for the development of fingerprinting. Another one is Thomas Graham, who was a British chemist known for his pioneering work in dialysis and the diffusion of gases. He is regarded as one of the founders of colloid chemistry. And also David Livingstone, who was a British physician, Congregationalist, and pioneer Christian missionary with the London Missionary Society, an explorer in Africa, and one of the most popular British heroes of the late 19th-century Victorian era. He had a mythical status that operated on a number of interconnected levels: Protestant missionary martyr, working-class "rags-to-riches" inspirational story, scientific investigator and explorer, imperial reformer, anti-slavery crusader, and advocate of commercial and colonial expansion.
