The Queen's University of Belfast was chartered in 1845, and opened in 1849 as "Queen's College, Belfast. Notable alumni is Mary Patricia McAleese, an Irish Fianna Fáil and independent politician who served as the eighth President of Ireland from November 1997 to November 2011. She was the second female president of Ireland. Another one is Drew Nelson, who was a Northern Irish solicitor and politician. He was the Grand Secretary of the Grand Orange Lodge of Ireland from 2005-16. And also Sir James Russell, who was an Irish colonial administrator in Hong Kong and served as Chief Justice of Hong Kong from 1888 to 1892.
