The University of Buckingham was founded as the University College at Buckingham (UCB) in 1973, admitting its first students in 1976. It was granted university status by royal charter in 1983. Notable alumni is Bader Ben Hirsi, playwright and director. Another one is Brandon Kenneth Lewis, a British Conservative Party politician and former lawyer, who has served as Chairman of the Conservative Party and Minister without Portfolio since the January 2018 Cabinet reshuffle. And also James Brodie Henderson, an English businessman working in the public relations sector. He founded a successful financial PR firm which merged with a Bell Pottinger company in 2010.
