The Birkbeck College was established in 1823 as the London Mechanics' Institute by its founder, Sir George Birkbeck, and its supporters, Jeremy Bentham, J. C. Hobhouse and Henry Brougham, Birkbeck has been one of the few institutions to specialise in evening higher education. Notable alumni is Ramsay MacDonald, first Labour Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Another one is Sidney Webb, 1st Baron Passfield, economist and co-founder of the London School of Economics and Political Science. And also Patrick Blackett, professor of physics and Nobel prize winner in Physics 1948.
